I was surprised to hear the horror, dismay, and general outrage expressed on another message board about someone licking his plate when he was done eating. There was nearly as much pearl-clutching about drinking the milk out of the bowl after the cereal is gone. How many will admit to doing this, at least when eating alone? Any other "gauche" table manners you want to confess to? I say waste not, want not.

I don't lick plates.. beard makes that a far too messy option. But I drink the milk and when I have a bowl of ice cream (and sometimes soup), I'll "clean" it with my finger and then lick my finger. :P

Who cares what other people think anyway.

I seldom lick a plate, but I don't mind what people do in the privacy of their own homes!

Not drinking the cereal milk is pretty wasteful, IMO.

I don't lick plates. That's a little too "piggy with his face in the trough" for me.

I use the spoon to get the milk out of the cereal bowl. But I also don't use a lot of milk, so there's not much left once the cereal is gone.

Are you talking about actually licking the plate clean, as in tongue to plate? Or just eating everything on the plate?

Actually licking the plate, no never.

I'll lick the plate at home, if I feel like it. In public, of course not.

I don't eat cereal these days but when I did, I always drank the milk. My parents discouraged waste.

I'll wipe the plate clean with bread but I won't lick the plate because my tongue is too short to do that without getting my chin or the tip of my nose in it too and I don't like getting food on my face. However, if my tongue was longer and my nose shorter I would probably lick the plate clean. But, as it is, I use a piece of bread to meticulously sop up every last little bit of "whatever" is on my plate. If there is milk left over in the cereal bowl I will tip the bowl and drink it down. Waste not, want not.

Right...spoons just don't work - drink or pitch it!
