So a nuke plant problem in Japan means I can't eat tuna caught in the Atlantic?
Yes, that's what it means. The ocean currents are strong, and spread the water all around the world. The nuke water will be more diluted in the Atlantic, but it's there.
I bought some water packed, solid albacore, Chicken Of The Sea last week for tuna salad, and after draining the excess liquid the chunks were decent quality and not mushy. I don’t like tuna much, but made the salad with chopped garlic, red onion, oregano, balsamic vinegar and olive oil instead of mayo. Added chopped romaine, salt and pepper and it was not bad for a healthy sandwich.
Chicken of the Sea...what (more details)? There are so many variations now, you have to be specific when either recommending or warning against.

It was solid albacore! This has gotten more complicated than writing an office report, lol.
So I conducted an experiment over the weekend (you're welcome) and concluded that the best reasonably priced recognizably named tuna available in grocery stores is Starkist LIGHT CHUNK in water and NOT the albacore at all, both in terms of taste and texture. I noticed that the latter, while marginally higher in protein, also invariably contain ADDED phosphorous. Maybe that's what makes them taste so hinky.
Is it my imagination, or is the quality getting worse and worse with the long-trusted supermarket name brands? Now that albacore has become a thing, the light is akin to cat food, and even the "solid/chunk white albacore" is mealy and slimy unless you buy the most expensive brands. Anyone else notice this, and what brands would you recommend (before I have to feed even more of it to my cats)?
Not sure if you mean a "supermarket"' brand, or a good national brand that is sold in supermarkets. I buy Bumblebee, and have no problem with it.
