Recently it got a bad report....can't remember now the issues. Probably can google...
The "issues" were probably that someone needs to publish and thus needed a new boogeyman. (Sorry, older than dirt, seen this merry-go-round - It's good for you! It's bad for you! It's good for you! whenever someone needs to publish a new book or a new paper or there needs to be a new health fad to fill the shelves - a few too many times.)
I use olive oil, peanut oil, or butter, primarily. For flavor reasons.
Not including olive oil, what do you now use for general cooking or high temp cooking? I was using Canola until my MD recently said to avoid...
I haven't heard any bad stuff about canola oil just that it has to be pressed a certain way for it to be healthy.
The farming community in my part of the world grows canola (formerly called rape seed) and so did my grandparents. I am not going to stop using it.
I'm still using canola oil, and will continue to do so. Olive oil is my preferred oil, but it's not always suitable. I have no interest whatsoever in using peanut oil as a substitute for canola.
I use lard, too. Made a Mexican taxi driver giggle when I had him running around town trying to find me a pound of the stuff. Good grief, I know it's in every household. Apparently they don't think tourists want the stuff.
Finally asked him what was so funny and he said he had no idea Americans ate lard. I told him if we want something to taste good we do.
Well, I don't know now. I switched over to canola some years back. Isn't that the way? I've lived long enough to hear "them" changing things back and forth enough to stop paying attention. Will have to look it up and see what the deal is.
I also use butter but lard and butter are too rich to use all the time for my tastes. I have some coconut oil on the shelf and also some Crisco and olive oil. And there are times when bacon grease is just the thing. If you can find bacon that will render down into grease anymore. Most of the commercial brands have become strange that way.
Edited to add what Snopes has to say about the myth that canola oil is bad for you. Have a read:
