It is not my year to host, so I am looking forward to NOT cooking Thanksgiving dinner.
In terms of food I like—well I like it all. I must say my cornbread dressing is very good. I also do a good turkey that I dry brine ahead of time.
And I like old fashioned pumpkin pie, so i make it every year. And, I will make it this year too. DH offered to buy one, but I want to eat mine, baked in a homemade piecrust.
We go out every Thanksgiving to Del Frisco Grille in downtown Fort Worth. I think I'll have the crab cakes this year. Husband usually has a burger or steak. Always get a slice of their famous cake. I may have the Nutella bread pudding this year.
I know some people who will be there too - but I don't expect you to find them - LOL!
My husband and I scored seats in a VIP section in the new Cowboys stadium a few years ago. It was really a fun day. Very different experience, eating a buffet, watching a wall of TVs, being close enough to nearly touch a celebrity as they walked by - a birds' eye view, though we basically ended up watching the TV(s) anyway. I especially liked the VIP parking!
I know you will have a blast. Hope the Boys win. Wait - they're not playing the Saints are they? LOL No that's the next week. Whew. The Saints are playing the Falcons so they SHOULD win on Thanksgiving but YA NEVER KNOW WITH THEM.
The next week, my husband and I will have our usual showdown. The last time we watched the two teams play, my husband had to eat crow but I have to admit that I've eaten some crow myself over the years. I am a Cowboys fan...unless they're playing the Saints. Or Aints - sometimes they're playing them.
This reminds me of a Thanksgiving about 20 years ago when we went to our sister's house in DFW. Her wealthy boyfriend got us four tickets to the Cowboys game about 10 rows up near the 50 yard line. But unfortunately we did not get VIP parking. It was their big charity fund raising game and Reba McEntire sang at half time and it was quite a half time show. My three brothers, who are all Texans, and I went. I'm not a football fan so mostly people watched during the game which was interesting.
Back to the question, I go out of town to visit family for the holiday so do not cook and have limited control over the menu. I love carbs so am looking forward to mashed potatoes and gravy and a sour cherry pie which I buy frozen at a special bakery and bring with me. My mom made great oyster stuffing but she is gone and neither I nor my sister can make it. So my favorite is the green chile turkey enchiladas the day after Thanksgiving.
Thinking of those left overs and sure enough: granddaughter who uses no left overs stopped by yesterday with left overs from the night before. She had cooked and shredded an 8 lb pork butt; used a little of it the night before and gave the rest to her mom and to us. I can imagine what we will come home with on Thanksgiving.
