I saw this on the news right after eating a huge salad with romaine lettuce.

It's amazing how contaminated produce gets so much press, while tainted meat gets less, especially when produce is contaminated by fecal pathogens originating in animal agriculture.

How come Romaine is always on the E Coli list? I won't be eating it even after it goes off that list.

Before you prepare your favorite dishes, take a moment to review the food recalls (lettuce, turkey and two more) and illness outbreaks identified by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Any idea what makes romaine lettuce more succeptible than other types, such as iceberg?

There was a guy from the CDC on the Today Show. He said just getting rid of your romaine lettuce isn't enough. He said you need to disinfect the area of your refrigerator where it was, and either disinfect or get rid of anything it had touched.

According to this article about an earlier Romaine lettuce contamination problem, it's because Romaine is so popular and widely grown, but it takes time to figure out the source of the contaminated lettuce.

There's also all the prepackaged lettuce people buy, which may have been put together with lettuce from 4-5 different farms. This increases the difficulty of pinpointing the contaminated source too.

I went to Albertson’s today and there’s no romaine lettuce. We ended up with escarole instead. Crunchy like Romaine. That and a bunch of Belgian endive, and one bunch of frisée. Got to have some sort of salads for Thanksgivings.

Omg I wish my Albertson’s carried escarole. They actually have had it on occasion; I have a few things to pick up tomorrow morning, hopefully they will have some. I prefer it very much over Romaine.

And interestingly, hubby and I went to dinner tonight at a local place, and the waiter said they’d tossed all the romaine out yesterday! The seared tuna salad I got is usually served on Romaine, but they’re doing it on spinach now. Did not run across that during the last scare.
