What did we used to freeze food in before we had all this soft plastic? I know some were freezer-to-oven dishes. Some were not. But the material was harder and didn't absorb tastes and smells as soft plastic does. What was it, please? Thank you.

In the 70s, we used old plastic margarine tubs to store food. Also wrapped stuff in aluminum foil to freeze.

Yeah, we had a house full of growing boys so the parents bought a deep freezer in attempt not to have to go to the grocery store twice a week. Mostly it was meat wrapped in plastic wrap and then covered in foil.

You are right, blueherons. There was freezer paper. Also plastic wrap. But there were also containers. I just can't think what they were made of. They were good, solid containers - most with plastic lids which you removed before putting the container of frozen food in the oven. Well, you removed the lids if you weren't absent-minded like me. I lost several to oven heat. :-( I am wanting to find out if any such are still made but don't know how to describe them to a store person.

Thanks

My dad was a hunter so we always had a deep freezer full of game. All of it butchered and wrapped in white freezer paper with my mom's cursive script identifying it and the date.

Are you talking about glass food storage containers with plastic lids?

No, they weren't glass. I keep wanting to say they were some kind of ceramic. But, if glass ones work, I'll go looking for them. Can we buy glass ones that are safe in freezers?

Thank you.

CorningWare containers? They are white.

They used to be able to go from the freezer to the oven, to the refrigerator. But the technology used changed when they were sold to another company. Now, you have to wait until the food cools down before placing into the refrigerator. And or wait until it is room temperature before placing into the oven.
