Fish and chicken?

I know, I know, I should be livin' La Vida Loca like the locals and buy my foodstuffs at the open-air market. But, I'm sorry, it's GROSS. Fish sitting on counters with no ice, flies all over them, the proprietor is leaning on the counter, chin in hand, languorously waving a rag on a stick over the fish, to no avail.

Our American world-traveling friend is not deterred. He says he knows how to gauge fish freshness, and will happily buy this disgusting (to me) product. I guess you can tell by the eyes, etc. After all, people WERE buying unrefrigerated stuff for eons, right? His Filipino wife got a bunch of unrefrigerated raw chicken.
Gag me with a spoon!

I ventured out of my comfort zone and bought some broccoli that was ginormous. At home, I realized it was half yellowed--obviously grown to maximum size and dam the quality!

SIGH. Sticking with our air-conditioned mall/supermarket. No fresh fish there.

All the milk products are HGT super-pasteurized, in boxes---not refrigerated. Same with eggs. I'm OK with those. The upside is, all onions are pre-peeled. LOL (no idea why).

If the given choices are a/c super market and no fresh fish versus fresh fish on the local open air market I will go with the fresh fish.

When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

Good for you. You are braver than I. Something about sitting in 85 degrees covered with flies...

OP, I'm with you. Most likely that unrefrigerated fish and chicken are fine, but psychologically I'd feel too uneasy and grossed out about it and wouldn't want to deal with it either.

The stench of rotting fish at the open air market in Manilla was too much for my four year old stomach. Many decades later, my unrefrigerated fish is fresh out of the water. Poultry is washed and dropped into ice water as soon as its butchered. I can eat a lot of things but that stench is never going to be forgotten. I'm all for meats kept cold.

I think meats last a lot longer than we're led to believe, but I'd draw the line on smaller fish especially shellfish. A large tuna or salmon that hasn't been cut up can be safe to eat for awhile, but something like shrimp held for hours without ice is toilet spray paint gun waiting to happen, especially if sold in market head-on since softer organs start to go bad much more quickly than thicker flesh.

Go to a market anywhere in the Mediterranean or dare to grocery shop on islands Or go game hunting anywhere. That Whitetail does not fall on a block of ice.
