I was reading the thread about coffee, and I wondered how those of us who devotedly drink the stuff came to drink it. I mean it isn't really good tasting at first. We have to want to learn to like it, no? I drink mine the way I always have--with cream, or some sort of cream like substance. These days I only use half and half. But in past years I've use other "creams."

Some of us like it with sweeteners and flavorings, but I never have liked a hot cup with sweeteners. If the flavor is added to the beans after roasting, then, yeah, I kind of like that for a change.

At any rate, I learned to drink coffee when I got my first job out of college. I would stop in Maryland Kitchen in downtown St. Louis and buy a cup to take up to work. I had barely had a cup before then. I knew I'd learn to drink coffee like a pro, and I did.

I did learn years later, that too much caffeinated coffee during a day will give me a roaring headache. And now, when I am concerned about my blood pressure, I drink decaf during the day. (Although I do drink regular tea during the day. And I enjoy doing it!)

Coffee for me does not come with any unusual or pleasant memories or anything like that. I've simply liked drinking it for years, and I cannot imagine a morning without it.

What about you?

I didn't start drinking coffee until college (late '90s.) Before that I thought it was one of those gross things that adults drank, like beer. I might have started out putting sugar in it, but now I drink it black or with a splash of half and half.

I'm in my 50's, haven't started yet.... don't expect I will ever start.

Good reason, I'm a Wyoming born, lots and LOTS of driving. I suffered terrible motion sickness, and my folks loved their 'pump-pot' and coffee so I happily associated the smell of coffee with the act of vomiting. Still feel like spewing cookies whenever I smell that swill known as "coffee".

I'm not a devoted drinker, but I'm drinking it now more than I used to. When we were kids, we wanted to copy our parents, so they would give us maybe half a cup with a lot of milk and some sugar. I usually drink it black, but once in a while I'll put a little sugar in it or get an iced coffee or Frappuccino out. Back when I wasn't really drinking it, I would always get it when out for breakfast, simply because they came around offering it and it was just kind of fun and different.

If I don't watch out, it can make me very tense and wound up, even from one cup.

I started drinking it when I started my first desk job in my 20s. Up until then I'd always had jobs where I could be up and walking around, not confined to a desk. Drinking coffee gave me something to do with my hands at least, since I had to sit at a desk.

I like the thought of it and the activity of doing it, more than the actual physical effect it gives me. It's nice and warm in the winter and it just smells cozy and inviting.

I grew up drinking tea, but once I started my career, it seemed the meeting rooms always had a pot of coffee available, but rarely was there hot water and a tea bag. It's been many years since, and I still have one cup of decaf tea each night before bed, but the mornings are for coffee. I love the stuff.

I think it was my first year of college. My boyfriend and I would meet in the dining hall early in the morning and he would always have a cup of black coffee. I would take little sips now and again. I didn't really like it, but my bf thought my reaction was hilarious. I don't remember when I started drinking it by the cup, maybe a year later?

I married my boyfriend and today one of our charitable endeavors is a boutique coffee bar I opened 6 years ago. We have done some amazing things around the world with our profits. So you could say coffee is very meaningful to me.

I've been drinking coffee since I was ten or so. My dad had one rule "coffee is served black, no sugar, no cream!" I violated that rule as soon as I could. I put 1.5 tsp sugar in 8 ounces. I've been drinking it for over 50 years and will until my dying day. I have one rule. No coffee after 11 am. I'm a bit of an insomniac so that is an important rule for me. Occasionally I like to get one of those little Starbucks Double shot drinks. They have quite the jolt!

When I smoked, a cup of of coffee and a cigarette first thing in the morning were heaven. That was 45 years ago. That first cup of coffee is still great though!
