This week, even the 70# produce for $12 place had avocados available.

In your area, you get a much broader variety of produce, especially in season. Things get sparse here from May - October.

The real deal is NOT the avocados, though. We have all the oranges, lemons, and grapefruit that we can eat. Many of our neighbors have trees and allow us to pick what we want. When we are done, they call the local food banks who send people to pick the rest of the citrus. That is important as fallen fruit attracts rats which attracts snakes ...

Here is a message about waxing I found from the Produce Marketing Association:

Produce Wax
Many fresh fruits and vegetables make their own natural waxy coating to help retain moisture. Extensive washing at the packinghouse removes this natural wax, so waxes are applied to some produce items to replace the natural ones that are lost. Each piece of waxed produce only has a drop or two of wax.May 8, 2014

I am going to just assume that yes, these avocados are being waxed. Maybe this batch just got a little bit too much.
