It's next week already but I am having my dinner this weekend because my mom is unavailable next week. Anyway this is what we are having:
Corned beef , cabbage, potatoes and carrots done in the crock pot with beer
Shepard's pie
Homemade Irish soda bread
Fresh Rye bread from the bakery
beer to drink
Thinking about spending the weekend with a cousin who married an Irish lass who likes to cook. So, who knows?
I asked her about typical St. Paddy's day food (last year) and I was shocked to learn she'd never had corned beef. She'd had soda bread but said it was extremely rare, brown bread was the common replacement. And apparently "boiled veg" is the bane of most Irish kids, but her mom was an enthusiastic home cook and managed to steer clear of boiled veg.
Completely ruined my perspective on what to eat for that day.

Corned beef, was dreamed up by a New York Deli owner (Jewish), for St Patrick's day. It is an Irish American tradition, not an Irish one. The Irish often eat boiled bacon with cabbage, which is what he based it on.
I’m trying a Guinness Pie from a recipe in this week’s paper. It’s basically a beef stew, cooked with Guinness and topped with a crust. Maybe Irish Soda Bread.
I also got a nice big hunk of corned beef on sale, so if the kids come for the weekend I’ll make that too.
We will have cider-braised corned beef on rye (with Swiss cheese and hot mustard), Irish potato cakes, spicy fried cabbage and chocolate stout cupcakes.
