Wow-up here in NH I really miss the great grocery stores in NJ. In New Hampshire we have:
Shaw's- so so
Hannaford- so so
Market Basket-yuk. Everyone up here loves them but they always smell and really turn me off. I must be the only one up here who does not like this store.
Jackson Star-pretty good store I found after we moved recently.
Stop and Shop-the closest thing to the NJ grocery stores that I am used to. We moved and we are now about an hour away from the closest one however.
I really miss Wegman's and Shop Rite. We were in NJ last weekend and we stocked up 4 coolers with all our favorites from Wegman's and Shoprite.

Hy-Vee. This is a locally based chain that is by far the largest here and I believe in Omaha and Kansas City as well. Pretty decent operation, I must say.
Dahl's. Locally based, seems slightly more upscale in more established neighborhoods than Hy-Vee.
Fareway. Great butcher, but everything else is no-frills. No bakery, specialty foods or anything like that. Great place to hit up before a bbq though.
Save-a-lot. I haven't been in this one, but it seems like an Aldi's or something.
Aldi's. No frills supermarket
Then of course there's SuperTarget and Super Wal-Mart.

There are also Winn Dixie, Albertson's and Super Wal-Mart for shopping. In the whole TOWN of Bradenton, there must be like five or six Publix's, three or four Winn Dixies, and about 3 Super Wal-Marts (there's another on U.P., but I don't consider that part of Bradenton).

In my area we have a chain called Buehler's. It's family owned and there are maybe 6 stores. It's great because the prices are good, they have a conveyer system which loads your groceries into your car...no carts allowed in parking lot at all. They are super clean and have fresh flowers in the ladies room. To me, the amenities are important. The produce and meats, and fish are top notch.
We have, for example, a Giant Eagle next door to several of the Buehler's stores and there they greet you with metal detectors, have no rest rooms, no bagboys at all, you must check the dates on everything to avoid buying outdated foods, and in general have an I don't really care about you attitude.

Bi-lo: kinda between HT and Food Lion.
Aldi...I love Aldi...but not one real close to me.
Super Target; Super Walmart.
Earth Fare, Asheville, NC based natural foods chain...2nd largest in US next to Whole Foods.
2 Trader Joe's (not my favorite store, sorry fans, even though I know they are the same owners as Aldi.)
Local natural foods store with 3 locations called Home Economist Market...pretty good.

Our closest two supermarkets are Mr. Z's, and ShopRite - in Brodheadsville in the Pocono's.
but not too far away, we can go to Giant, Wal Mart, Sam's Club or Aldi's (which I never shop at anymore, since getting worms in my canned potatos, and mold on my spaghetti sauce)
