In Madison, we had:

Copps and Sentry (Basically the exact same supermarket, across the street from each other, different names)
Cub Foods (Never went in there)
Woodmans (The best supermarket in the WORLD, bar none!)
Trader Joes (Opened around the time I left)
Whole Foods (Expensive organic products)

Wow, I didn't know IGA stores were still around. We used to have one in our town, until Piggly Wiggly bought them out. Both are pretty much small town type stores.

South of Pittsburgh we have...

Super W-Mart (who doesn't?)

Giant Eagle
Shop n Save
Foodland
Pechins
Save A Lot
Aldis
More For Less

Can't recall the last time I was in GE or SNS, far too high priced for my tastes. Foodland serves the smaller areas, probably a third of the stores they used to have, some good bargains. Pechins, a one-store local legend when it was at it's old location. The other three are probably well known to most.

We used to have quite a few Krogers, A&Ps and Loblaws, long gone from here.

One of the nicest stores I've ever shopped in was the Pick n Save in Oconomowoc, WI.

There's still an IGA here along with a couple other IGA stores in nearby towns. It's the cheapest place that I can find a gallon of Flav O Rich milk. It's just $4.45 which is still expensive but cheaper than anywhere else.

In Susanville, CA we have a Safeway, a small IGA, and a tiny locally owned market Our regular Walmart seems to be adding more grocery items to their shelves. These are the main grocery stores for the entire county. The outlying towns have tiny mom and pop corner markets.
