Shop Rite is actually one of the better stores, they have some of the lowest prices for stores around here and I pretty much exclusively shop there.

Food Lion is very common throughout North Carolina, South Carolina, and the eastern half of Georgia.

Winn Dixie closed all of their stores in North Carolina, South Carolina, Northern Half of Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, and Virginia.

Winn-Dixie still has most of its stores open in Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, the southern half of Georgia, and Louisiana.

I also wanted to add a few more here in SoCal:

Vons
Pavilions (basically an upscale version of Vons)
Whole Foods (expensive organic products)
Bristol Farms (expensive merchandise all around)
Costco
Sam's Club
Food 4 Less (owned by Ralphs, competes with Stater Brothers)

Recently, Fresh & Easy stores have been popping up. I've been to my closest one, but only to use the Wachovia ATM.

we don't have one in wisconsin but while we were on vacation in florida a few times we would always go to publix. I love the publix brand of salsa. I only wish we had one in my neck of the woods.

When I lived in the DC area, I shopped at:

Giant Foods-My main store. Nice layout of stores, self checkout and had great sales on meats.

Safeway-Horrible stores, hard to navigate and understaffed. I avoided this place at all costs.

Harris Teeter-IMO, an enjoyable shopping experience, a little pricey.

Wegman's Huge selection of gourmet and specialty foods and other items. I personally found the layout to be confusing and stores can be very crowded.

Baldacci's-A smaller, local chain that's similar to Wegman's. Nice selection of beer, wines and cheeses.

Shopper's-A discount chain in the DC area. Nothing asthetically pleasing or appealing, but some good discounts to be
had.

Super "H"-A large Korean owned chain with a large presence in the Northeast and a few stores in other parts of the country. Nice selection of produce.

Grand-Mart and Lotte which are also Korean, were impressive, esp for seafood.

In PA where I am now:

Giant-Not the same as the DC area Giants, but they are both owned by an overseas (ahold) company and carry the same generic brands. My favorite in York.

Weis Markets.-Less crowded, but nice selection. A local chain with stores in PA and MD.

Wal-Mart. Great prices on staples, but their meats are HORRIBLE.

Pathmark-Shopped there a lot in college, but they closed the store in york in the 90s.

There was a local chain in York called "Jay's" at one time, but they went under in the early-Mid 90s when Giant began expanding rapidly in the area.

As a kid growing up, I remember Piggly Wiggly, Winn Dixie, A&P, Kroger, Scwhegmanns and National foods.

The one near here in NJ is 'too gourmet' I think and not enough 'everyday' items. Plus they sell like lawn furniture in there also,so I'm not sure if they wanna be a Wal-Mart or what.

It wasn't crowded the times I was there and there were also plenty of cashiers, not like at the ShopRite I go to. There are like 2 cashiers on Saturday nites!

Food Lion is located as far north as WV and possibly PA. (not one of my favorites though)
I like Martin's (although they sometimes are a bit pricier--like their produce).

Yeah..I'll go to Wegman's if we are making something really special or having company. Other than that, I don't go often.
