Had Durian in a shake before at an asian market (smelled bad but flavor was okay) and will eat just about anything.

Time to try the real thing (raw Durian) since Bizarre Foods show host Andrew Zimmern couldn't handle it.

So how good (or bad) is Durian? Your thoughts & experiences are appreciated!

If you have no sense of smell, it's delicious. If you can smell at all, good luck to you. The piece I had smelled like rotting garbage and B.O. and I've heard far worse descriptions.

Why would anyone want to try something that smells that disgusting? Curiosity I guess?

This was MY impression, but I am an adventurous eater.
The smell depends on the kind and how ripe is the fruit, but the taste of a GOOD durian is quite pleasant and could be acquired.
I have Korean friends and they feed me a good, tasty durian.

BTW: Eating durian and drinking beer at the same time may kill you.

It's the very best-the king of fruits! Rich, sweet, flavorful, nutritious. As a result, fresh fruits sell for 20-60 dollars each in Hawaii.

However, if the fruit is over ripe or from a poor quality tree then you may have an unpleasant experience.

The smell of a ripe fruit in its formidable shell, in many cases, is quite similar to propane gas, but with wafts of a more fruity nature. My wife doesn't like to have them on the deck outside the bedroom at night because the smell is so powerful it can disturb her sleep. Nevertheless she loves them, and I (clearly) do too.

If you're interested in learning more, go to Year of the Durian website to read Durian goddess Lindsay Gasik expound endlessly on them. www.yearofthedurian.com Edit: Start here: https://www.yearofthedurian.com/start-here

Yes, the extreme amounts of sulfur in the fruits blocks alcohol detox by the liver so not a good idea to drink around the time of eating them. For that matter, best not to eat anything else with them either other than perhaps other light tropical fruits such as mangosteen or langsat.

The only other drawbacks are one or two durian burps and durian breath afterwards. Anthony Bourdain, who enjoyed durian, described the breath effect "like french kissing your dead grand mother".

I made the mistake of trying durian candy once. Smelled like rotten onions doused in turpentine, and I had that unpleasant burping for hours afterwards.
I've seen durian ice cream in the local asian market and have been wondering if that would be any better, but the candy incident is definitely making me question my desire to satisfy my curiosity.
