I certainly can't find them in the local groceries. Bavarian Cream is a standard donut flavor, but the chocolate icing on donuts is poor.

Is he referring to "cream sticks" (which are pretty much the same as eclairs)? That's what we called them in Ohio. I always preferred the ones filled with fake whipped cream, not Bavarian cream.
OP might want to look at Walmart's vanilla brioche as an alternative. It's a bit lighter and not as sugary as those strip Danish, but even more addictive. :-)
BTW, the thing called "Bavarian cream" in the US is actually pastry cream, a custard thickened with starch, which is (surprise!) used to fill pastries. Real "Bavarian cream" is custard mixed with whipped cream, usually set up in a mold and served as a dessert.
