I am sure that I am NOT the only foodie that is a closet lover of some low end luscious foods and recopies. I'll fess up right now. I happen to like some foods that aren't trendy.
I'll go first.
1. Cracker Barrel. Never had a bad meal there. I am fanatical about their pecan pancakes. I love them. same goes for their home fry potato casserole and fried shrimp in a basket. Their biscuits and deserts are always good.
2. Potatoes Au Gratin from a box. Yup. From a box. There are many good brands and no bad ones. I think I have tried them all. Cheesy potatoes will be a theme here. You'll see.
3. Tater Tots. Sprinkled with herbs and doused with truffle oil, or baked in a casserole with LOTS of cheese - Velveeta works for this purpose - or crispy with ketchup S and P - I love those darn things.
4. Creamy ranch Habanero potato chips. I can't eat just one.
5. State or county fair apple dumplings.
6. Bloomin' onions.
7. Lime green jello mold with cream cheese and pineapple. My MIL made the best.
9.A tomato sandwich on WHITE BREAD with salt and pepper and mayo.
10. Bavarian Pretzels with cheese dip. (maybe that's borderline - but not at a fair or carnival.
11. My late Aunt Anne's Impossible Coconut cream pie made with Bisquick.
12. A DELICIOUS and BEAUTIFUL "home made cake" that involves Cool Whip, Instant Vanilla pudding mix, but fresh or frozen strawberries and strawberry Duncan Heinz cake mix.
So let's hear what foods without fancy pedigrees are YOUR favorites.
That is some list! I too love boxed au gratin. I had unexpected company over once and the husband kept telling the wife, 'see? These are good potatoes. Delicious!' I wasn't even pretending, I let them know I made it from a box.
I can and do make amazing Mac and cheese from scratch, but gosh darn it I do not turn my nose up to the blue box kind. Childhood favorite.
Spam is another 'low rent' food that I love to eat. In the form of homemade musubi, possibly a stir fry too.
Not only SPAM but chicken spread, corned beef spread (forget the name of the manufacturer though). I like KFC from time to time, no other fried chicken like it.

Have to admit that I was back in Ohio for three weeks last month. Over the course of a few weeks, I took out most of my nephews to Cracker Barrel and Frisch's. I must admit that both restaurants offer well prepared foods with plenty of healthy selections at a very reasonable prices.
Those are NOT restaurants that I would visit weekly but a few visits a year are great.

OMG DH loves those things! He likes them crisp, on top of chili, or doused in nacho sauce, or...any way lol!
I may have to try the Au Gratin potatoes while they're still around. Decades ago, I loved Betty Crocker's Noodles Romanoff. Forget that half-cup serving nonsense, too; I ate it all lol. I think I've tried every copycat recipe, too (using sour cream or cream cheese), and it's just not the same.
Cracker Barrel also makes a mac n' cheese now that's superior to KD.
The havarti and cheddar one is my favorite.
This thread brought back a memory. In 1999, I took Family Leave to look after my 92-year-old grandmother while my mother recovered from surgery. I just had to help her dress, make her lunch, etc.
One day the subject of Spam came up, and her eyes lit up and she said she hadn't had any in years, so I bought a can and fried it up and we had it for lunch. Another day I made her fried salmon cakes with egg, bread crumbs, etc., and canned salmon. She said her mother made that for her and her siblings when she was a little girl.
She would live another two years. Never once worried about cholesterol.
Restaurants are either well managed or poorly run. The well managed places usually serve good food and have a high level of service. I’ve had wonderful, beautifully-plated meals at Waffle House, and horrible meals at an expensive “must go” restaurant recommended by friends.
