I visited Chuck’s Produce (a West Coast grocer) yesterday, and asked a produce guy if they had any new crop apples, and they did! I took home a few ginger golds, which the guy told me were like Yellow Delicious.
They aren’t really like YD, but they have a mellow sweet lime flavor, to my taste.
There should be more new crop apples coming in in about 2 more weeks. I love eating the new apples that enter our markets here every fall. I am always on the lookout for old fashioned varieties, and others I have not tried. I mix them up when I make applesauce.
We also have new crop Bartletts. I will buy some of those next week.
What apple and/or pear varieties are you looking forward to eating this fall?
My favorite apples are honey crisp. They are the perfect balance of sweet and tart, and the right texture. Before I found them my favorite was Granny Smith, but sometimes they are just a tad too tart. I love apple season because then I can get my honey crisp apples for a reasonable price, they are way too expensive the rest of the year.
Looking forward to making salted caramel apple pie bars too. 🤤
My favorite apple is a mid 1800s heirloom, Arkansas Black. They're a deep burgundy and darken with storage. They're tart, and very, very crisp...always a snap, never mealy.
My favorite apple varieties are: pink lady, liberty and newtown pippin. Looking forward to them, just a few more weeks.

Yesterday I saw a sign at a local orchard that Gravensteins were in. I think I might have to go buy some for applesauce. Good apples + Instant Pot = wonderful applesauce.
I like Pink Ladies too. I’ve only ever found Newtown Pippins once before, I think. Are they cooking apples?
I have had some grown in upstate New York, and some grown on the east end of Long Island, and the upstate apples are better. Deeper red, crispier, and sweeter. Someone said to me that upstate New York gets colder nights and this helps the apples develop better.

Snapdragon is my new favorite! And luckily there's a nearby orchard that offers them, along with Cameo, another favorite.
I also loved Arkansas Blacks and Winesaps when I could get them. I like an apple that fights back a bit.
Made my first apple crisp of the season the other day!! Pretty much non-stop apple crisp the rest of the fall. I feel sorry for people who can only get Red Delicious, Yellow Delicious, and Granny Smith at their stores. They all taste like cardboard.
