Canola. Canola may refer to an edible and industrial oil (also known as canola oil) produced from the seed of any of several cultivars of rapeseed bred to be low in erucic acid from the Brassicaceae family of plants, or to the plants themselves, namely cultivars of Brassica napus L., Brassica rapa subsp.

Compliments of Wikipedia.

It is the oil extracted from the northern rapeseed which I'd grown in the Canadian prairie provinces and the Dakota's.

No such thing as canola, its a made up word, a combination of Canada and oil.
The source is rapeseed, I believe its poisonous unless processed at high temps.
I like olive oil....and buttah!

This. One of my 20 something kids has berated me for using canola oil for anything and for having Wesson oil - which is what my mom used - in my house.

Anyone know what is wrong with these?

I believe they came up with the name Canola because well... rapeseed oil just doesn't sound too appealing.

The main difference between oils is cooking or smoke point when the oil burns up.

Oils like peanut and canola is great for frying. Olive oil is good for sautes and light cooking. Extra virgin olive oil is not good for sautes unless you use a heavy amount to avoid drying.

If you're looking for weight loss, it doesn't matter what oil. Less is better, all oils have calories regardless how healthy it is.
