Anyone make potatoes baked in a fire? I'm not sure, perhaps it's the unmistakable change in the direction of the seasons, but I have been thinking about this for the past couple of days. When I was a kid (50's), our next door neighbors would sometimes have a small fire in the evening, in the back yard. They didn't have any fancy hearth, just a circle of stones around a burnt place in the ground. A bit of fire wood and a nice little blaze would be going. Sitting around this with friends was a lot more entertaining in the pre-video game days Someone would produce (kids don't ever imagine where adults get stuff from) potatoes wrapped in foil and they would be tucked in between the coals and pieces of wood. After awhile the spuds would be extracted from the fire with a stick and we would have to wait for them to get cool enough to handle. Then you would open them up and butter and salt would appear. The skins would be burnt and hard for about an eighth of an inch, making a natural bowl that you could hold with the foil peeled back. I remember how good the hot buttered potatoes would taste, eaten with a spoon, sitting out in the back yard with our friends
That sounds like the good life. I had potatoes to grow up on. Fried and put between two pieces of bread. I thought that was the cat's meeyow then...Little did I realize it was depression era food.
QW we did that growing up too because we did a lot of camping that all of us wanted a campfire when we were at home too. We made hobos also of a hamburger pattie, sliced potatoes, carrots & onions topped with S&P and butter wrapped up in a foil packet. I make those in our oven at times but they sure don't have that campfire taste.
amber I wish you could disburse some of your heat around to other states. I would take some for sure since we didn't really have a very long hot summer here.
Nomad your supper sounds yummy.
YLisa sorry DH isn't feeling well hope it is just a 24 hour thing so he is feeling better soon. Tell him I said if he ate more veggies I bet he would be stronger.
QW...We do potatoes like that all the time on charcoal or wood. I also sometimes cut them in slices, add onion, peppers if really motivated, butter and seasonings before wrapping in the foil...Good eats for sure!
Amber...is hot here too 110.7 at 6 pm...sheesh what a change from what we had...I put the crockpot outside and plugged in...I think even though I had it on low, with the excess heat was probably cooking on hi!!

My tank has been topped off real good at the AYCE Ling's Buffet. If it said hot and spicy I tried some. Did not partake of the fish bait or steamed tofu... I stayed with the trusted Gen Tso's and Mongolian mainstream stuff. Only disappointment was the jalapeno shrimp...Pretty bland. Most doubtful that I will need any breakfast now.
Home cooking tonight. Loving the smell of oven bake ribs now simmering in a pan of sauce...Of all the things to forget I forgot the sweet potatoes. I need to start writing my list on my forearm so I don't leave it at home and can't forget what I went after.
Let's chat about pickles. The ever popular Dill variety and the lowly sweet pickle.
You just can't get enough can you? Kats will hunt you down and find this....shhhhhh....
