How to Clean Burn Residue from Stainless Steel Pan

I've tried wadded up heavy foil, along with dish soap or a paste of baking soda/vinegar or water- scratched the daylights out of the pan, had my teeth on edge while doing it (it's like fingernails on a chalkboard for me, lol), but if i remember correctly, it works like a dream~
