Born in Taiwan, so this has been somewhat of a staple all my life (as well as shaved ice and stinky tofu).
And it's been in the DC area since the FroYo invasion.
That said - this started out as a somewhat natural treat as it was simply milk tea with some fruits/veggies.
It's now more common as a cup of favored chemicals.
Yi Fang, a Taiwanese-origin chain I think, is still making real fruit bubble tea, but I'm not a fan of it. I prefer the flavored chemicals from places like Tiger Sugar
I first tried bubble tea in Hong Kong nearly two decades ago. It never caught my desire even though I'm an avid tea drinker. Even though I am sure it is made of natural ingredients, all that ingredient mixing makes it taste like something unnatural to me.
They used to have this 2 for 3 bucks at the hole in the wall Chinese food place I've been going to for many years...now 2 for 4 bucks. I like it, but only occasionally get it.
They are really exploding in popularity in my neck of the woods. I think at least 2 or 3 have opened up in my area in the last couple of years, and a lot more in neighboring cities. They taste good, but for someone like me who is a)lactose intolerant and b) on a keto diet, is pretty much a no go for me now. And yeah, the price means it cant be something I do regularly either.
If the sweetness isn't enough of a deterrent, there's the sucking up of tapioca clots through a straw.
This has been around in the LA area for decades, but I never developed a taste for it.
