Depends on the time of year.

In summer I enjoy fresh cherry tomatoes and sliced cucumbers as a side. The rest of the year it will be one of the following: nothing, pickles, baby carrots, celery sticks or pretzels or chips.

A burger out at a restaurant often requires fries.

Depends on what kind of sandwich.

Grilled cheese/tomato soup

Hamburger/French fries

Fish sandwich/ cole slaw

Reuben sandwich/ potato salad

Ham and Swiss/potato salad

Steak sandwich/onion rings

Tuna salad/potato chips

And a hot dog is good with sauerkraut salad. I'll eat a small tossed green salad with any of these.

I'm totally wary of restaurant cole slaw. Seems rare to get a tasty one. I've been known to ask for the vinegar shaker and add salt and a pinch of sweetener.

Kentucky Fried Chicken used to have wonderful cole slaw but that was years ago.

BBQ chips every time. A kosher pickle most of the time.

I like cole slaw on a sandwich or next to it, but my most common accompaniments are carrot sticks and potato chips.

All hinges on my mood or what I am craving. It could be hot slaw on a hot dog or pulled pork for chips beside a burger. There is no rhyme or reason to what I will do from one day to the next. It could be a case of gray matter syndrome for me. One standby side for most sandwiches that my wife doesn't have to as if I want is jalapeno peppers. Those little circle ones in a pickle jar.
