I would make macaroni and cheese, maybe from a box, maybe not. My inner adult would throw in some veggies and maybe a can of tuna or some shredded chicken to make it more of a complete meal.
Right now it is early morning and I have no interest in dinner at all.
Yesterday I did a pot roast in the crock pot and smelling it cooking all day definitely got the appetite begging for pot roast and thick brown gravy with potatoes and carrots.
I love pot roast but don't get it very often because the price of Chuck roast is so high. $8 a pound in the last market I was in. I can buy steak for less than that.
I’m not hungry now, but when my inner child craves something, it is usually the kind of old-fashioned New England cooking that I was lucky enough to eat sometimes during that childhood.
Roast pork, the good stuff that actually had fat and plenty of moist, somewhat darker meat than “the other white meat” promoted so heavily a few decades ago. With real from-scratch in-pan juices and roasted veggies, or real gravy. Ditto for roast turkey (not turkey breast) with savory herbed dressing (ixnay to “southwestern style spices” and sweet mixtures for this) and genuine gravy, with lumpy freshly mashed potatoes. Green beans and other veggies from the garden or a local farm stand. Maybe a hearty chicken soup made from a whole chicken, the kind that had deep yellow skin and fat that would form golden liquid globules.
For dessert: from-scratch pumpkin or squash pie, apple brown betty, Indian pudding topped by unsweetened hand-whipped heavy cream, or Grapenut custard. Just about anything with real maple syrup as the sweetener.
Also, sometimes the inner child has pangs for authentic dim sum of many kinds, or Hainanese chicken and rice, or pork with rice cakes stir-fry.
Lastly, NOT from childhood but from a mere one meal at a Savannah area restaurant: smothered chicken and gravy, over rice. Banana cream pie to swoon over.
There’s a common theme in all of these, that of long slow cooking over the range, or lots of prep work. I have cooked in the crockpot to try to duplicate some of the same items but it does not taste the same as what the older methods produce.
Did not intend to write a book! I just miss a lot of foods that we don’t have anywhere around here.

I'd go for the Swedish Meatballs at Ikea! Unfortunately our roads are covered with ice and snow so I'm not going to make the
45 minute drive. Fortunately I found the recipe back in Covid Lockdown days, and kept it, so now that you made me think about it, I took out some ground beef to thaw and will them tonight, with egg noodles.
Almost anything sounds good,but I love fresh baked European bread with butter,slices of cheese and a glass of milk during the day.In the evening a nice IPA would go with the sandwich.
A seafood meal - only because its most expensive. So I prefer to go to a seafood restaurant, where they prepare the scallops, lobster, crab, etc. perfectly! I would love some grilled asparagus with it, delicious garlic mashed potatos, and delicious cheesecake for desert.
that would also be my last meal if i were on death row.
