I had a sprinkle of salt on tomato wedges while growing up,but I prefer them now plain or with black pepper sliced on buttered Pumpernickel bread.

Either salt or sugar will bring out the flavor.

South of the Mason-Dixon line, it's a felony! Not using lots of mayo on your tomato sammich is only a misdemeanor, though.

It sounds like your friend is depriving himself of having a flavorfully diversified palate. My Aunt is that way and insists on eating things without ANY spices. This can be frustrating to me being an amateur food scientist

Yes you are correct, he basically only eats chicken breast with no sauce. The issue I take with him is that he is making the bold assumption that I am in the MINORITY for liking salt on my tomato which I find hard to believe.

I am a fanatic tomato grower, and whenever I go out to pick tomatoes, I've generally got a salt shaker in my back pocket.

And green fried tomatoes? I always throw in just a dash of cinnamon, and I mean just a faint dash. Not enough that it stands out, or is even noticeable, but it just seems to change the chemistry of the flavor...get a lot of compliments from it

I don't like raw tomatoes, but my mom spoke fondly of going out in the garden as a child with a salt shaker and eating the ripe tomatoes with a little salt. This would have been in the 1930s, so people have certainly been salting raw tomatoes for a long time.

Sliced tomatoes require salt. It's a rule.

Cherry tomatoes don't require salt unless they are sliced in 1/2. If sliced in 1/2, see above.

I slice or cut in half, even the tiniest of fresh tomatoes, just so they can get some salt.
