Bread Crumb Question
So I bought panko bread crumbs after hearing everybody rave about them for the longest time, and they make a very nice breaded coating on chicken, etc.
My question is should I keep buying the regular bread crumbs for other applications such as meat balls? Last night I used the panko in some meatballs and they turned out lovely, but since the panko are more expensive I wondered if they are only meant to be used when you are coating the outside of something with bread crumbs.

I have been using Panko now since approx. 1 year, since several people (professional chefs amongst them) recommend it to me.
I love my coating/ breading to be nice, browned and crisp, and I am very pleased with the results I achieve with using Panko as a breading/ coating.
However, did I notice that Panko is more on the expensive side, and the package size I am currently able to get, only lasts for 1 or 2 meal preparations, and doesn't go far at all.
Call me "old fashioned" but, I do keep my "old trusted bread crumbs" on hand for my regular trusted recipes like meatloaf and meatballs.
The main reason on why I started using Panko is the fact, that it seems to hold up it's crispy texture for a much longer period of time, while the breadcrumb breading seems to get soogy on me rather quickly.
My meatloaf and meatballs don't need any improvement, and therefore don't need any changing in ingredients.
Why mess with something when it's not broke.....LOL.
So, yes....I do keep Panko AND traditional breadcrumbs on hand.

Thanks MB2! It won't let me give you reps right now...
I only used the panko because it is all I have in the pantry at the moment. I think I will buy some regular bread crumbs to keep on hand too. I'll let you know if I notice a difference the next time I make that meatball recipe with the regular breadcrumbs.

Debsi, I use panko for everything! I buy mine from an Asian market here in town, they price out cheaper than regular breadcrumbs, see if you can find a market close to you.

Oh I use them for meatloaf and use them on all my cooking. It's a staple in my kitchen. If you purchase them in larger bags like at a Asian market, they won't be as pricey. They make great cutlets and ohhh so wonderful for just everything. I no longer use regular bread crumbs.

Do you two think your meatloaf and meatballs taste better for having used panko than regular bread crumbs?
I regularly shop at a Chinese market that is near my office. I didn't buy the panko there though.

I'll be honest, I dont use breadcrumbs in my meatloaf, but the texture of the meatballs is vastly improved.
