I'm used to heavy stuff to go along w/ it, being from a southern African-American family:

greens
cornbread
baked beans
potato salad
cole slaw
macaroni salad
black eyed peas

Just wondering what your family bbq side staples are.

Mostly baked potatoes, beans, and fruit. Not big on sides, just want the meat! Sides just take up space.

Corn on the cob is a big hit in the summer.

I often do salad, corn on the cob (my parents' hailed from the midwest and that was often dessert), potato salad, cole slaw, and now I often do grilled veggies. I like baked beans, but I think the family would kick me out of the house if I tried to serve them.

Default Just These Things

Being from Texas, I prefer my barbecue with potato salad and good pinto beans. Sliced white bread will do fine, but if I go out, it's usually rolls. As soon as I move into a new house someday, I will be getting a new barbecue smoker so I can do my own meats.

Take a look at this extra. I've shared this on a few previous threads, but it is relevant for this thread:

Case44's Texas Barbecue Sauce

Ingredients:

1 cup ketchup
1/4 cup worcestershire sauce
1/4 cup white vinegar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp salt
1 tsp pepper

Start with the ketchup as your base, then add and mix the other ingredients together in a saucepan. Heat contents with pan covered on stovetop using medium heat for about 7 minutes (use a cover because this stuff will splatter!), then immediately bring heat way down. Let the contents sit until splattering stops -- should take 3 to 5 minutes. If you've got jars to store your sauce, use them (I use a mason jar). Refrigerate for 7 to 10 days (it might last a little longer than that, but I wouldn't go too long), or you may freeze until you need it again. Delicious when served fresh, so it's great for any gathering. It will offer the right balance of Texas taste and zing for all smoked meats. You may use it as a marinade or as a great topping for your sandwiches or entrees. I use it for dipping (less mess).

Now you can top your meats! Enjoy!
