I haven't seen it happen to quart containers of ice cream yet, but i've seen it in the "pint" containers(Dove ice cream, less than 16oz.).
I don't think anyone sells a 64oz. half-gallon anymore.

Nothing new, and yes, most don't notice. Your basic shopper doesn't really take the time to compare. They grab off the shelf, fill the buggy and head to the checkout. The companies know this, rely on it. From the article, one company said they'd received 800 phone calls concerning the smaller size. That's a laugh to them. The one from the cereal company saying she wasn't aware of any consumer problems from the downsizing. Happily clueless and probably a true statement.

Yes restaurants are sizing down the portions, we've discussed that somewhere here before. McDonald's even went so far as to bring in management teams and chefs to direct them how to apply the newly changed portion sizes for minimal consumer impact. The size of the fries package was reduced and of course, less fries in the package but it still looks full, same price. Shed half a potato off a biggie fries package times hundreds of thousands sold per day and you're talking some serious savings. Savings you can apply to a year end bonus or advertising to keep people coming in the door.

People, those of you that know how to shop and play the game, congrats and well done. Those of you who don't take the time to shop efficiently, you simply get what you deserve.

What ticks me off is the cheapo paper towels that downsized each sheet to abut half the normal size. You gotta use two sheets to equal one of the old ones.
