I've only had eastern NC barbecue. It was okay. I'm not a fan of vinegar. I'd like to try western NC/Lexington style barbecue someday. It's tomato-based rather than vinegar-based. Just hope I can get some that isn't messy. lol
And as much as I hate to admit it lol, I'd also like to try brisket. I've seen shows about barbecue and the brisket looks good.
My favorite...Memphis dry ribs...OMG!!! Heaven is Corky's, the original one, on Poplar. Or maybe Gridley's...or Rendezvous...
But it's hard to beat our local 'que here in Decatur, Alabama. No, not at Big Bob Gibson's, but at more local places like Hickory Stick and Whit's.
In Alabama, bbq = pork, no beef allowed! And it has to be smoked, with hickory smoke.
I ate at Bob Gibson's a few years ago while passing through Decatur, and while it was not the "best" i had, it was still very delicious.
Ate at Rendezvous and Neely's while in Memphis. Loved them both. The difference with Memphis and KC is the rub. Memphis style (especially at Rendezvous) had more cayenne pepper than what we use. Meats were great! just don't like that spicy heat on my Q. Guess I am just used to KC style.
I think BBQ is becoming so popular that the title of BBQ KING needs to be branched out... I mean, I live in Rochester NY... I am almost Canadian if you look at my location on the map... but in Rochester alone we have BBQ RIB fetivals and other BBQ fucntions... there are at least three MAIN BBQ joints downtown that get a ton of recognition here and every suburban town is popping up with their own little BBQ Bistro of sorts... it is a crazy trend that seems to be spreading like wild fire... Everyone has their own twist and way of doing it that makes them unique... I can't pick just one location.... I just love BBQ as a whole...
I love BBQ styles from everywhere as long as it is real BBQ, (meaning slow smoked) with or without the rubs, marinades, sauces etc. My favorite is Texas dry rubbed brisket slow smoked to the "look at it hard and it falls apart" stage, picked or chopped and piled on a bun with mustard and hot sauce. Surprisingly some of the best BBQ brisket I've ever tasted was at a bare bones BBQ joint in downtown San Diego named "Henry's BBQ" on Market Street. It's been years and It might not be there anymore.
