I will be making this recipe this weekend. Since moving out of the south, I have been craving some real sweet tea. It's going to go great with my BBQ ribs and cornbread, I can't wait!

For a really refreshing kick, add a bit of vanilla to your tea. Not much -- maybe half a teaspoon per pitcher, more if you like vanilla, LOL.

I make sweet tea using a ratio of 6 teabags and a cup of sugar to a gallon of water. I don't drink it all that much (even though I love it), but my partner is addicted to it.

I can't drink iced tea unless it's super sweet. (can't imagine wanting to, lol)

breeze823, the baking soda takes the bitterness of the tea away. Makes it really smooth tasting and clear. No horrible baking soda taste either.

But sweet tea IS real iced tea. It is what I grew up on...every restaurant served it that way. If you just went in and asked for "tea" you would get a tall glass of iced sweet tea, oftentimes with the pitcher left at your table. Actually I rarely order or make it now since I have to avoid the sugar, but it is the way tea was mean't to be. I do brew my tea with an occasional variation, though, by brewing an orange spice (e.g., Constant Comment or Pickwich orange) tea bag and some cloves in with the regular tea to make a subtle spicy tea.

If you just went in and asked for "tea" up here in the Pacific Northwest you would get hot tea...iced sweet tea is next to nonexistent up here.

The only places that usually have sweet tea are the restaurants at truck stops.

Just another one of those regional differences...

I ran out of Lipton's and had some expensive rose-petal black tea and used that instead. Perhaps not everyone's taste, but I thought it was fine. Add sugar when hot, of course.

That's how it was in El Paso (where we just moved from). But not even the truck stops had sweet tea until you got about an hour and a half away from El Paso, going towards east Texas. Then we'd stop and get me some sweet tea and fried corn balls.

Well, MacDonald's has it now. It sounds good but I don't want to try it because of all the sugar. Yesterday I made a new tea recipe: green tea, frozen strawberries, and honey -- iced. It was thirst quenching with less guilt.
