I've just recently learned that there's actually a small Amish community in Sarasota, FL. I think there are about 1/2 a dozen restaurants, and they have a farmer's market on Saturdays. I hope to get down there in the near future.
I loved to go to Lancaster County as a kid. I remember a great restaurant that gave children wooden nickels with each meal to get a piece of candy in the general store.
Do try! You won't regret it....
That is cool about that restaurant doing that for the kid's!!
Thank you for this information. I have also tried searching on-line but like you I could not seem to come up with the locations here in NC. I have found their products here and there but would sure enjoy going to an actual farm.
It is so worth it going to an actual farm, IMHO.
I am more of a "country" person anyway, and just LOVE to see the animals being treated so good.
Amish people treat their live stock/ animals as part of the family and lively hood....and take nothing for granted.
Talking about hard work and labor....wow.
Let me tell you, if anyone ever took to the fields, picking strawberries, collecting hey, picking apples, potatoes for hours and hours each day (I have, while I was younger, in Germany during the summer months)......it would be a rude awakening and an eye opener for many !
Or, even guiding and controlling the horse (with the buggy attached)....not easy at all, and way harder then it looks !!
It gives the phrase :"Fruit of labor" a whole new and deeper meaning!
This is how our ancestors lived, and for us (being as spoiled as we are...speaking for myself here, sorry) it is unimaginable.
I, seriously, highly recommend this experience, (at least once) in a lifetime.... to anyone.
When I looked out the window at them working in the fields, it looked like I was watching a movie because their way of life is so much diffrent than ours. I think it would be interesting to live their way for a month, so I either would, or would not, appreciate my way of life.
I may like it so much, that I would become amish! Very facinating.
The Amish will fare much better than we, if Armageddon ever occurs. They're a completely self sufficient culture, and do not rely on things like petroleum products or fertilizers (natural gas).
That they would-I so admire them and their work ethic. Loved staying in Lancaster and hearing the steady clip clop as the carriages went by. The restaurants they run there are so very good. And Cyn is right-quality craftsmanship on furniture. We have quite a few Amish out here in western MN.
Nobody makes better furniture than the Amish! My mom has Amish neighbors and they are nice people. She does allot of transporting animals for them or taking them to do errands as they have no vehicles.
I absolutely love Amish people. Their craftsmanship and their lifestyle intrigue me.
I recently met someone who works in an agricultural business and who once worked for the health department. They told me something about some of the things that the Amish use for fertilizer that makes me think twice about purchasing some of their produce.
I really don't want to get into this but I would advise ASKING your local health department if there's any reason for concern.

I can only observe, that, no matter WHERE fruit, veggies, meat comes from.....there will ALWAYS be a reason for concern...period.
But, I am certain that no matter WHAT the Amish use for growing their produce, can't be any WORSE then what is being used in general in the entire world.
(Just think, some countries import their produce into the USA, having used pesticides and fertilizer to treat their produce, which are banned over here in the US! )
At least I know I am certain it's nothing artificial...that's for sure.
Just think of the most recent tomato scare, as the latest in a string of never ending events!
Before that: Spinach!
And, of course proceeding to the endless millions of pounds of recalled meats, during recent years....huh.
To be honest with you (only speaking for myself here) no matter WHAT Amish people do put on their produce, it all sounds pretty good to me right now in comparison....LOL
I totally agree with you. Just so you know, I'm an organic foods person!
I love the Amish people and don't want to say anything negative about them ... There's a large community of them around me where I presently live. We share the road with buggies and I see them parked at the farmers supply stores.
It's kind of like beef. I prefer not to personally know or to think about the actual cow that I'm eating... It's just better for me not to know!
