Even though this sounds completely gross, i will try it next time i have watermelon just for the heck of it. A small piece.
Since i like cheddar cheese in my chocolate chip cookies, i might like salt on my watermelon.

Heck yeah, I salt just about everything. Apples, melon, mango, tomatoes, radishes...basically, a lot of produce. Some have told me 'salt isnt good for you' but actually, your body does need it. I keep those little salt packets in my purse, sometimes you go somewhere and they dont even keep salt around.

When I was growing up in Oklahoma some of my family salted their melons, and even their grapefruit. I never did that, and never will. I haven't lived in Oklahoma for 30 years, and I've never run into anyone outside the south who salted their melons. Judging from posters here though, I guess people do it everywhere.

Some other "strange" things my family did was add sugar and milk to their rice, and some drank iced tea straight with no sugar or flavoring whatsoever.

That's the only way I drink tea, hot or cold. I may add lemon but rarely. Sugar - never.

The thought of adding salt to fruit, esp. melons, is a huge turn off for me. Fruit in their natural form is the best way to consume, at least in my house.

I was horrified the first time I saw somebody put salt on their melons. I thought they had reached for the wrong white granular stuff. In our house, occasionally (if it wasn't sweet enough,) we'd sprinkle a tiny bit of sugar on melons. Not watermelon, though. And just a tiny bit. Anytime somebody sees me doing that, they think I'm weird. Oh well! I like garlic on my popcorn. Does that count?

Wow. Y'all are some strange, strange people. Now, I think I'll try salt on the next melon I eat. I don't like melons aside from watermelon, so maybe it will make them better. But, how would I work cheese into my chocolate chip cookies?

This sounds like something I would do - I love salt, not a big sweet tooth person. So I have tried it, but I vastly prefer melon plain.

Growing up in California, I thought salting melon was an Asian thing, for what it's worth.

I used to salt my watermelon, but got away from salting a lot of stuff years ago. Never heard of salting cantelope until I met DH. Tried it, wasn't impressed. He also peppers the heck out of his cottage cheese. That's ok. I pepper my popcorn.

We love garlic on our popcorn!! Are you kidding - you have to try it!!

We always salt our cantelope. It really enhances the flavor. Give it a try! I don't believe it is a southern tradition. I grew up in a PA Dutch home and area and most folks I know from that area salt cantelope.

Watermelon!!? Never! A little sugar, maybe, but not salt.

Fresh cracked pepper on cottage cheese is the only way to eat it. The bland of the cottage cheese and hot spiciness of the cracked pepper is wonderful.

LET'S EAT!
