Today I was driving home from work, and very nearly hit a wild turkey. There were 4 of them total, all crossing the road on foot (there's a joke there somewhere) but only the last 2 were in danger, the other 2 had reached the other side. I had to slow from about 40 MPH down to 5 to avoid the last one, and I was close enough as I drove by that I could have reached out my window and beakslapped him.
The entire time I was braking I was thinking to myself 'Thanksgiving is SO CLOSE...KILL! Why are you stopping??!!!!'
I'm pretty sure there's a "season" for hunting wild turkey in North Carolina, but I don't think it's considered hunting if you run into one in the middle of the road with your car. I had a car behind me too, it really could have been ruled a justifiable turkicide.
But I didn't hit it. I slowed enough for it to pass. As I drove away I considered the fact that I have no real clue how to dress a bird, and that maybe I shoud practice on a chicken or something first, and who knows what shape the carcass would have been in after that kind of trauma - but come on, how often does that kind of opportunity come by?
It gets worse the farther south you travel. We are being invaded by wild hogs here in south central FL. What the AR folks call razorbacks. They can get mean. We had one killed on the highway inside the city limits a couple or so weeks back. Usually when you see road kill with them it's always multiples if they are young and if large just one. I've seen as many as six in a pile and I don't think any would have qualified for a holiday ham dinner or pull pork feast. We have a lot of turkeys too. Saw one the other day strolling across the Sheriff's Dept. Pistol Range so I guess our turkeys are not really bright either. I've even see a group of gobblers get spooked and fly right over the skeet range when it was in use. Glad you stopped. Wild turkey is a delight to see in the wild. They are also a delight to serve on the dinner table.

I've had wild turkeys fly in front of me around chest height while on a motorcycle, the thought of striking one at 60-70MPH strikes me as an awfully pricey way of getting a turkey dinner.
