Don't think I've ever had Afghani. I like Middle Eastern the best and Indian also.

I like them all. I was raised in India and Pakistan and developed a real love for the cuisine. Afghani cuisine is mild - somewhat similar to the Iranian food I have had - love them all and quite different from Indian/Pakistani. Middle Eastern foods are wonderful and, here again, quite different. There are some staples such as yogurt, some of the breads, etc.

I love all 3. With my Indian heritage, I'm partial to the Indian, of course. I find I best describe Afghan cuisine as in-between Middle Eastern and Indian cuisines. Indian cuisine on the whole is spicy, while Middle Eastern is not as spicy but has distinct tastes that Indian doesn't have. Afghan kind of blends the two.

I prefer Indian, maybe my favorite cuisine. Dal makhani, chana masala, saag paneer, naan, papadams, chutney, burfi, kheer, samosas, yum... Indian is also incredibly diverse. The dishes I just mentioned are pretty common in U.S. Indian restaurants, but there is incredible regional diversity in Indian cooking. The Wikpedia page ( Cuisine of India - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ) is a great place to start.

Middle Eastern, I like it, but probably not as much as Indian. Hummus is great with pita bread. Falafel can be yummy, as dolma (stuffed grape leaves).

Afghan I've only tried once. I had a soup and I believe "kabuli pulao", a rice dish not unlike what you'd find in an Indian restaurant. It wasn't bad.

Middle Eastern food can be great, but so many times it is very bland.

Mmmmm...Indian food...

This is so true. The foods I grew up eating from East India are not the same dishes you find in your standard Indian restaurant. Restaurant fare is either North Indian/Punjabi, or South Indian. Our dishes are similar yet taste different because the spices are added differently. Our sweets ("Bengali sweets") are milk/cottage cheese based and described on the Wikipedia page under "Eastern." They are so much tastier than the standard sweets the restaurants offer. But to find them, you usually have to go to Indian sweet shops in the Little India section of town.

That said, I won't pass up a chance to go to a good Indian buffet! I crave good Indian all the time!

I'm thinking that I need to find another Afgani restaurant. It has been too long since the one time I went. Plus, it was at the beginning of my dining life (growing up, the most ethnic food we had was "Chinese" and Scandanavian baked goods). It would be interesting to know how I rate it after all the different foods I have had since then.

Anyone know if there is one in Tucson?

I don't believe I've eaten any of those foods...not even cous-cous.
