I find most food gifts at Christmas end up the trash because the person gets too much, it goes bad or stale, or it just isn't something they like. When people bake for Christmas, for example, they tend to try to make things that are fast and simple so they can make a lot without breaking the bank, and while it is a nice idea, the stuff just tends to be wasted in the long run. If I were going to give a food gift it would only be for a specific person with a specific thing that I knew they wanted and not just 'I'm making food gifts for all the people at work" kind of thing.
I have read so many posts, here on CG, where people throw home made canned goods straight into the trash, becasue they are afraid of them. I used to give homemade fruit butters out as gifts, then I stopped, & instituted a no gift policy. We still get gifted a basket of home made cakes, cookies & candies from our neighbor, & we buy her a basket from costco. But that is it. If you know of something a person might like, make it for them, but no point in giving some home roasted nuts to someone who won't eat nuts.
Thanks for the encouragement! I was feeling a bit uncertain about this.
Can you tell me about anything you have given or received that you thought especially good?
Make sure you give the gift before xmas so that they may set the treats out for guests on the eve of or day of. In addition to all the sweets, you could add little bottles of brandy or scotch, etc. Even mini bottles of wine and packets of mini-cheeses and cured meat like shrink-wrapped salami, summer sausage and even a can of smoked sardines. Depends on how far you want to go with it. I like to put together baskets they could take on a picnic. But anything you make yourself will be really nice.
that's so sweet of you to think of. Good luck!
