Is pizza a scam?
How much overhead goes into making a pizza? 25-30 bucks for a large pizza? Is this not the biggest food scam out there.

Where the heck are you paying $30 for a pizza?
I could make a black truffle pizza that would be a few hundred dollars, but I don't think I've paid more than $20 for a large recently.
As I always point out in these threads, you can make your own for under $10, and probably less than that if you've got some of the ingredients sitting around.

We pay less than $10 for a large one topping pizza from the Italian guy with the specialized shop. We pay $6.99 or so from the chain.
I would imagine that the heavy duty ovens and equipment are what drive the costs up. I love a brick oven pizza though and will go out of my way to purchase a pizza from there.
The pizza guy I buy from imports the wheat he uses for the pizza dough because it isn't found around here. You can definitely taste the difference and I will gladly pay.
The OP must live in a place that has inflated prices. I would cry if I had to pay that much for a pizza. After I got done crying I would probably move. LOL

Get out of California and you will pay less than half of that for a large pizza.

Yes the mark-up on any take-out food is a high one. Especially pizza.
Make your own and freeze them. Just make a night of it. So much cheaper and easy for later on.

If it were a scam there would be no pizzerias. They've been around about a hundred years now.

Well, I've always thought pizza was overpriced. The other day at Round Table I paid $28 for an x-tra large combination pizza. It's not that much bigger than a large, which was $20. To me, that's a scam. The cheapest, Domino's, is $15 for a one topping large.

Part of the cost of every pizza there is related to the cost of CA real estate and taxes and insurances. Much more than the cost of flour and pepperoni.

That might be a rip-off, but I don't think it qualifies as a scam.
And don't forget high school geometry. A = 3.14 * r * r
So, for example, let's compare a 12 inch medium, 14" large and 16" Xtra large:
Medium = 12"
r squared (12 x 12) = 144 square inches.
144 x 3.14 = 452 square inches for a medium
Large = 14"
r squared (14 x 14) = 196 square inches
196 x 3.14 = 615 square inches
Xtra Large = 16"
r squared (16 x 16) = 256 square inches
256 x 3.14 = 803 square inches
So the XL is "only 2 inches" bigger than the large, but there's a difference of 188 square inches. That works out to just a bit smaller than an 8" individual pizza.
