I spoken to so many people who have told me about special items that only go on the menu at Thanksgiving. I talked to one person who said that her mother made Baked Macaroni and Cheese as a side dish; she made it on Thanksgiving only. I know of another family who always have Sweet Potato Pie.

I had an aunt who froze tomato juice in ice cube trays and added it to glasses of tomato juice. My mother always served stuffed tomato the evening before. My wife would spend hours preparing consumee, always served cold. These dishes only appeared at Thanksgiving.

Does your family have some special Thanksgiving Only dishes?

Mashed turnips, for some reason we only have this on Thanksgiving though I see them in grocery stores all the time. They also come cut into cubes and frozen And we love them. So why my family makes them only on Thanksgiving?? I havent a clue.

We have whole-berry cranberry relish on Thanksgiving and rarely have it any other time of year. We all love it, so I don't know why we don't have it more often.

When I was growing up, for some reason Mom always made mashed rutabaga every Thanksgiving. She and my brother were the only ones who liked it, and she'd make a huge bowl of it. The two of them ate it all week! The rest of us thought it was quite yucky. Funny thing is, Mom always called the vegetable a "turnip" even though it was really a rutabaga.

Fun memories.

Any food that only one or two people like, such as creamed onions (my father's favorite) and candied yams, are reserved for Thanksgiving only.

The turnip rutabega thing has been an arguement between my Grandfather and myself ever since I learned to cook.

I have to make homemade yeast/cheese rolls for Tgiving & Christmas ~~ it's a tradition. The kids would be unhappy with me if I didn't. LOL

The rest is pretty much the usual stuff.

Absolutely not! Several times each winter I'll cook a full-on turkey dinner with the works. Pumpkins and cranberries aren't just for Thanksgiving anymore ...

Turkey. My family will eat it on Thanksgiving, but that's it. Really they would prefer a ham, but I insist on turkey.
