Are the locally owned pizza restaurants better than the chain pizza restaurants? (cheap, meat)

There are about 10 different Italian restaurants within 4 miles of where I live. Usually when I take out from there for lunch I get sub sandwiches or slices of "special" pizza such as the eggplant Parmesan which is amazing. One of them makes a great Caesar salad. A large pie is usually $14-15 which is more than the chain restaurants, but it's real pizza.

Exactly.. I would rather pay more for real pizza. There is this little pizza place by me that makes this really good red potato pizza. It's a little on the pricey side, but it is sooooo worth it!
Yes, but I do like Mellow Mushroom pizza, its the only chain pizza I like. Now Pizza Hut, Dominoes, Papa Johns, Little Ceasars, Cicis, etc. to me are all gross, some more so than others.
I've never loved it or thought it's great, but at one point, it was passable pizza if you had to quickly feed a group of not-too-discerning people in a pinch (it used to get ordered for staff inservices a lot at my old job, and for things like scouting groups I'd work with). It seems like in the past couple of years, the recipes for everything from dough to sauce have drastically changed, though.
They've gotten worse. Years ago, the first few Papa John's pizzas I had were really quite good. The pizza was terrible the next year. It certainly hasn't gotten any better.
This is true. Many pizzeria owners coast on a comfortable profit margin selling to a public that's not all that picky.
But have you ever had a truly memorable pizza from a chain?
I have from Pizza Hut. Years ago they had a deep dish Sicilian that was square and had like 5 or 7 kinds of cheese on it like lasagna. Man oh man, that was the best one they ever had. Was really POed when they discontinued it.
It depends, here on Long Island we have about a billion mom and pop pizza places. Ive been to some that are good, some that are decent, and some that are so bad I would rather get Pizza Hut or Domino's.
We have a local chain called Mulberry Street with 3 locations on Long Island that has excellent pizza. However, like I said above we also have some mom and pop pizza places that are downright horrid.
Im not going to automatically fall into the trap of local/mom and pop = good, chains = bad. That's the sort of NIMBY thinking that is holding Long Island back.
