I've never heard of seasoning a skillet with a housefire.

What to save? If time and no lives lost, cookbooks!

My recipe box

Can't think of anything else.

I wish I had more things that were passed down from my mom...

I'm with Highlands, I think I'd go for cookbooks, especially the 365 Ways to Cook Pasta that is covered with my mom's notes, and the cookbook I've been adding my own recipes to for years & also has some of her recipe cards in it.

So that's two. I guess I'll make my all-clad rondeau my third, that thing was expensive!!

I'd grab all the dishes I could (probably breaking them in the process ) that belonged to my grandmothers. Also my Wusthof Santoku knife and my Kitchenaid mixer. Have had it 4 years and have used it *once*. Oh well....never know when I might want to bake something.

For me it would be my set of Henckel knives and my Kitchen aide mixer. I would over my cast iron with oil and let them get reseasoned.

There is not a single thing in either of my kitchens (we have a rental home and an owned home) that can't be replaced. Heck, if I could guarantee that the fire would be contained to JUST the kitchen (and that insurance would cover the damages), I can think of a few more things I'd like to throw in!

Heh you can probably tell I'm not a serious cook .

Me too Including the ancient stoneware bowl that my Dad used on weekends to mix pancake or muffin batter. My family are all passed but when I use these familiar old things it's like they are there in a way

I would grab my KitchenAid mixer, my knives, and my "special" foods stash from the fridge (Parmigiano Reggiano, vanilla beans, saffron, caramom pods, Prosciutto). I don't keep cookbooks in the kitchen, so they'd be safe.

What a nice post. You and I must view things much the same. I find a great deal of comfort in having "family things" in my home.
