Because of my brother's dietary issues, I grew up eating a salt-free diet; Mother wasn't about to cook two separate meals. If I am serving sliced tomatoes, from the garden or the greenhouse, I sprinkle them with basil and/or oregano. I think it is more flavorful than salt.

DH will salt cantalope (pepper too) and grapefruit. I have seen people salt watermelon and tomatoes also, Never heard of salting apples though! I am not a big salter (pretty much eggs and popcorn that's it) so it never occured to me to salt fruit.

Same here about the dietary issues, however I do sprinkle a little salt on watermelon and cantaloupe.

I never thought about doing pepper on cantaloupe.

I remember seeing Paula Deen do a recipe where it was a watermelon salad that had blue cheese crumbled up in it. For some reason, I never thought those two things go together.

My mom grew up with sugar served on tomatoes and never really liked them. Then she discovered some people salt them and really enjoyed them. So that was the way she served them when we were kids. Now I'm pretty sure she doesn't because my dad takes blood pressure medicine.

I've never been a big fan of apples, salting fresh apples makes them edible to me.

Watermelon? Yeah we did that too, but I prefer the natural sweet flavor of h2o-melon.

My daughter salts all her melons.....something she learned from her dad. I guess it must have some sort of cool sweet-sour appeal. I've never even tried it since I'm not a big salt eater.

I started another thread about odd ingredients together where I mentioned a salad with ingredients similar to what you mentioned. It is surprisingly good together.

On a different note, I notice how many people say they don't use salt or don't use much. I use much less than I used to, and I don't like things too salty, and I know it's a health issue a lot of times, but it's kind of hard to cook without using salt, in my opinion anyway. Are you using herb blends instead or something? Just curious.

Mom had us put salt on cantalope and watermelon so it would not upset our stomachs?? I don't do that much anymore. Stomach upset is a small thing beside of high blood pressure.

I put salt on raw tomatoes and eat them, yum! However, I still don't know whether a tomato is officially classified as a fruit or vegetable.. why is that one always in between?
