I will salt green apples and occasionally other apples.

You are not alone!!

(I don't salt any other fruit, though!)

If it has seeds, it's botanically a fruit.

Peppers are technically berries.

Many cultures sometimes use hot sauce, and/or and squeeze of lime or lemon on fruit; it adds a tang to the sweetness. So, since these hot sauces are extremely salty, I would say it is common worldwide. I eat Papaya with Mexican Hot Sauce and many fruits with lemon or lime.

I understand that tomatoes are fruit but, believe it or not, it it the only fruit declared a vegetable by the US Supreme Court. It appears that there were import tariffs on vegetables not fruits and to settle the case, the court rules that in common usage, it is a considered a vegetable.

I'm definitely one not to use salt on sweet or sour fruits...except tomatoes. Actually I don't use much added salt at all on foods except for starches (when making bread, rice, potatoes, pasta, etc.). I don't use it much on meats except for some stews, soups, and the like. On the other hand my sister was and is a salt user on watermelons, lemons, canteloupes, grapefruit, apples, pears, etc.

Daddy loved pepper on his canteloupe, but although I AM a big user of black pepper and chiles, I don't generally use the former on fruit (except tomatoes), and use the latter only occasionally.

What I DO enjoy on many fruits is cheese, which of course has salt in it generally. I especially love Cheddar, Ementhal, and blue cheeses with apples, pears, and pineapple. Other cheeses also work well. I also like guava shells with white cheese or cream cheese. I think you'll find a lot of Southerners eat cheese with fruit, although maybe they don't realize it. If they don't eat sliced fruit with chunks or slices of cheese alone, I bet many of them DO eat chat is commonly called down here a pineapple salad or a pear salad...basically a pineapple ring (or canned pear half) that is topped with shredded Cheddar (or maybe cream cheese), and optinally a dollop of mayonnaise or salad dressing, topped with a maraschino cherry and or some mint leaves...the whole thing is served on a few leaves of lettuce.

These are all great responses. I would like to reiterate that I only salt fruit occasionally. Whenever you have produce that is ripe and flavorful, I don't think you need salt. Sometimes it's just an added kicker, though.

One of my older brothers remembers a neighbor girl who would walk around with a salt shaker in one hand and a piece of fruit in the other. That would have been in the 60s when there was less of a sensibility about lowering salt intake. The image seems humorous to me though.

Good thread. Growing up, we salted most fruits, watermelon, canteloupe, oranges, grapefruits, limes, apples and definitely tomatoes. And, yes, I love cheese with fruit. I never would have thought of pepper and pineapple.
