Default Unusual pickled foods

Like many of you, I really like pickled cucumbers, especially dill and sour, no sweet, thanks.

This weekend I tried a food from a salad bar that I didn't recognize. The waitress didn't know what it was either. It was delicious. As I left I asked the waitress restocking the salad bar and she said it was pickled green tomato. It was really good, though sweet.

At the store there are lots of different, even eccentric pickled foods, some seen over the years: cauliflower, watermelon rind, eggs.

Have you tried any of these or know of other pickled foods?

If you tried them, did you like them?

Green tomato relish is a must have when I eat fried catfish. It is the perfect complement to the fish. There is a catfish chain in Texas called Catfish King (used to all be David Beard's Catfish King), that serves the greatest green tomato relish. If you have lots of green tomatoes, you could make some: Uncle Phaedrus, Finder of Lost Recipes

I love all things pickled: okra, baby corn, eggs, onions.............

I've eaten pickled okra and it was great! It's been a while, but as I recall, it had a dill flavor. Never tried any of the pink pickled eggs though...just can't do that!

I love those Italian pickled peppers - also the pickled red bell peppers. I guess I'll eat any pickled pepper!

I just saw something called frog balls at the specialty store I was at last night - it's actually pickled brussels sprouts.

The pickled green tomatos I have had were not sweet. Quite tasty thou. Can only eat a couple before the mouth starts to pucker up.

I like dill pickles with attitude. Will buy a jar of crunchy dills, add a bunch of fresh garlic, some crushed chili peppers and let them sit in the fridge for a few weeks.

I'm a big fan of pickled hot Chile peppers either jalapenos or serranos that come in a can with a few slices of hot carrots. I toast an English muffin, butter it and layer slices of the pickled peppers on it. I then sprinkle a little garlic powder and Mexican whole oregano in it and there you have it, a pickled pepper sandwich.

The peppers are also good with a couple of warmed corn tortillas.

I used to like those red, pickled hot sausages in a jar PENROSE HOT SAUSAGE GLS JAR Also, from times long ago, I learned that the combination of pickled eggs and beer yielded a most deadly form of chemical warfare the next day. There was this guy at work.....

For those who like spicy ya gotta try hot pickled okra. I love the stuff almost as good as fried with cayenne in the flour coating. The other pickled veggie I can't get enough of is pickled beets.
