must have been a stone crock with a lid, both my grandmothers had like a million of them.
I have a memory of my dads mom putting down kraut in them in her basement in South St Louis, right on Chippewa. We were sitting at Sunday dinner, and the crocks started exploding, it sounded like artillery in the basement!
Kraut was dripping from the ceiling, it was foul... turns out she got a bad batch of vinegar from the grocer.
I still have a few of those crocks.... what great memories!

The Agenda - July 19 - 25
This week's dinner selections begin with what to do with leftover cream gravy from mom's recent chicken dinner. The answer will come this afternoon. I'll do breakfast after I get off of work (don't worry -- I'll eat something before then), and I'm planning sausage, eggs, and biscuits. Other items of note that I'm looking at are chicken fettucine Alfredo, Stouffer's French bread pizzas, and also hamburgers that I'm making homemade. If something new arises that I'm sneaking in, you'll be hearing about it.
Enjoy your dinner table in the days ahead, and bon appetit!
I bought a batch of lovely red peppers on Friday. All the same size - smallish. And perfectly shaped. Eight of them for about $4. Great price.
Stuffed them with basmati rice, minced turkey, pine nuts, sauteed in diced onions, carrot, celery and garlic. I stuffed them half full then put a square of goat cheese in the middle, then continued stuffing them. Topped with freshly grated Pecorino cheese.
Packed them all into a casserole dish with a simple tomato sauce. Smelling really nice so far. Another 20 minutes to go, then dinner!
We'll take some to work tomorrow for lunch too. It's pretty wintry here - rainy and blustery, so this is the perfect food for us now.
I have some left over corn, baked beans, and green beans..... might make turkey meat loaf and add a little. But I am betting on a phone call from one of our parents for dinner as we haven't seen them in a week and that is how they get! LOL.... It is more for the kids than us but that is fine- I don't have to cook when that happens. Since I didn't get the call yesterday I am guessing it happens today..... But I am pulling the meat from the freezer to be safe and I can always use it tomorrow!
Not sure about tonight. Mommy wants to go out but I'm worried she wont have the energy for it. Better make a back up plan just in case - maybe sausage and chick peas stewed together and then rice and salad for sides.
Yesterday we went to DH's sons house for my hubbys BD...a nice suprise was waiting--his son decided we all need some time together, mostly my hubby and him, so he grilled chicken and had fresh mixed summer squash also grilled. His Fiancee made rice as a side and it was very relaxing and fun. We played their wii bowling game and had a great time. I had to take it easy cause of my arm but still did ok. Those games are crazy fun!!
Tonight we are having grilled hamburgers with baked beans.
