You bet. I think the meat mixture could be whatever anyone likes..Sometimes I leave out the rice and use crackers instead, and switch up the spices.
The main thing I never get quite right (but this recipe does) is the right amount of moisture and the right amount of sweetness in the sauce.
I just made a peach pie yesterday.
I have a small redware (pottery) pie plate that makes the crust nice and crisp on the bottom. I was out of Crisco, so I had to use all butter in the crust. I put a layer of crushed almonds on the bottom, under the peaches, for some added crunch. Pretty darn good.
