Gosh~I haven't had this in decades! My mom also used to make this for dinner occasionally.

Your recipe sounds good. I'll have to try to make this soon.

I start off with a standard white sauce (made with undiluted evaporated milk) to which I add black pepper and cayenne pepper powder. I add ground beef that's been fried off with fresh pulped garlic. Serve over toasted white bread or English muffins.

I haven't had that for decades either. We had it for dinner too. Made with Buddig beef and served over waffles. I don't know how Mom made the white sauce

I found that recipe somewhere in the distant past....after you make it a few times you won't even have to measure the ingredients. It'll all come naturally. You can also change out components for variation (as noted by some posters). It's something you can make in a few minutes when you don't know what you want to eat. And NWV I use wheat for my grilled cheese also....I fix it just the way Gue does. You sacrifice some taste but overall it's better for you. Bon apetite !!!!

Dried beef, from a local butchershop. (Well, almost local, it's worth the 90 mile drive!), for true SOS. (at my house)
Served over mashed potatoes, or toasted English muffin bread.
Also, make country sausage gravy, for biscuits. Brown the sausage, add the flour, brown the flour, them add the milk.
My kids used to like "creamed tuna" with canned peas, in it. Basicly a white sauce, with tuna. (Mr.Debey refused to eat the tuna concoction!) Served over toast or mashed potatoes.

I'd pick the peas out. 54 years old and I'm still picking out the peas.

This thread brings back such good memories. We used to make SOS in a popcorn popper when I was in college in the 60s. The only cooking vessel we could have in the dorm was the good ol' popcorn popper.

Every Sunday evening we made SOS with ground beef, milk, flour, and pepper. We'd spoon it out on white bread and eat it. It was a comfort food for me back then.
