If it's really, really ripe, I don't have a problem opening it by the stem. But if it's less than "over ripe" I've been known to have problems to the point where I've had to cut the stem end off with a knife to get the peel started. I don't have any bananas right now, but I'm looking forward to trying it from the other end!
