Default Oatmeal

How do you cook oatmeal?

I ignore the package directions---no wonder they call it Gruel. Yuck.

The basics, I bring the water to a boil, add the old-fashioned oats, and stir constantly on high heat with a wooden spoon until it looks right. Two minutes or so, comes out al-dente, with a nice oaty flavor.

For the extra touch, I plump up some raisins in the boiling water first, and I top it with sour cream instead of milk, along with brown sugar if I have any.

But I'm famous among the children in my family. I think the only reason they look forward to seeing me is that I make my special Dutch Apple Oatmeal for breakfast. As follows:

Use apple juice instead of water, seasoned well with apple-pie type spices, and lots of raisins plumped in. Cook the oatmeal as described above. Serve topped with butter, brown sugar, and sour cream.

I buy the packages of plain instant oatmeal and add hot water and a bit of splenda. I might try the apple juice next time.

I cook mine with milk instead of water. Usually add some more milk and brown sugar to serve.

If you like it with sour cream you might also like to try it with a nice thick Greek yogurt. Make sure it's Greek yogurt like Fage brand - very different than Dannon and other American style yogurts.

I guess I'm a little different. I like it uncooked. I use the old fashioned rolled oats, some cream, a handful of fresh fruit, and eat it like that. If there is no fruit available (not really into canned fruit, although that is better than nothing) I may use a small amount maple syrup, sorghum, or honey to sweeten it a bit.

That would be really good if you toasted the oats with some almonds and a bit of honey or maple or molasses to sweeten it.

It's a shame i don't eat oats anymore!! I love them but last times I've eaten them was in the flavored packets. Mo mentioned them, they are handier . We'd get them for the kids and we'd eat them too!! Lot cheaper to buy the rolled oats in the round box and flavor yourself. Unfortunately I never have breakfast.

I get the instant stuff and microwave it. My favorite is the maple and brown sugar flavor.

I get the instant.
I fill my bowl with the appropriate amount of milk and put in the "Cinnamon Roll" oatmeal. It's the only flavor I'll eat.
