Good morning. I've decided that this year, my daughter and I are going to share a birthday party. I tend to only give parties every other year for the kids (b/c there's 3 of them and it can get expensive), but I haven't had one since I was in 7th grade. So now that we've moved here and I've got plenty of friends, I'm throwing myself a party. And since my daughter's birthday is 6 days before mine, and since everyone I know has kids (whom they'll bring anyway) then I decided to just combine them.

ANYWAY, I'd like food ideas. I'd like to make as much of the food as possible to save on costs. There is a small kitchen there (we live in an apt, so I'm having it in the pool house) as well as tables, chairs, bathrooms, etc.

I'm thinking of a margarita machine for the adults? Lots of sodas, waters, maybe some beer.

I make a yummy bacon wrapped chicken, so I'll make that. Probably some Josephinas - 59363 - Recipezaar. A couple of veggie trays. Chips/pretzels/crackers.

Any other ideas? I anticipate about 20 - 30 people (incl kids).

Hi Bella. They'd range from age 3 - 14 (b/c my son's friends would be there I guess).

Those are good ideas. I was going to make tons of appetizer like things but decided to go towards main dishes instead - they're easier to make all at once and they feed more.

In addition to a few chips/dips, I'd like 2 - 3 proteins to choose from, 1 - 2 starches, 1 salad, 2 - 3 veggie trays, 1 - 2 fruit bowls (both veggies & fruit from Costco, lol).

But not sure what to make. I thought maybe shredded pork, chili, cilantro lime rice (like @ Chipotle), warmed flour tortillas, huge mixed salad??? Is that stupid?

Plus, I won a Digiorno prize pack last month, so I have 5 frozen pizzas I can make, plus a $50 to use toward food/drink. Also have $10 gc for Friendly's ice cream, so that will get 1.5 gallons of ice cream for free... My daughter and I are going to get our cake from Costco.

Shredded pork and chili sounds good and maybe some meatballs wouldn't be such a bad idea either. Tou never can go wrong with pizza, especially for the kids. I think your party will be a big success. Let us know how it all turns out.

It's not a main dish, but you mentioned dips so I thought I would share. This is so good and very easy! Every time I make it people ask for the recipe.

Buffalo Chicken Dip

INGREDIENTS
  • 2 (10 ounce) cans chunk chicken, drained
  • 2 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup Ranch dressing
  • 3/4 cup pepper sauce, such as Franks® Red Hot®
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese
  • 1 bunch celery, cleaned and cut into 4 inch pieces
  • 1 (8 ounce) box chicken-flavored crackers
DIRECTIONS
  1. Heat chicken and hot sauce in a skillet over medium heat, until heated through. Stir in cream cheese and ranch dressing. Cook, stirring until well blended and warm. Mix in half of the shredded cheese, and transfer the mixture to a slow cooker. Sprinkle the remaining cheese over the top, cover, and cook on Low setting until hot and bubbly. Serve with celery sticks and crackers.

My grandkids love these when I make them.

Lil Smokies - wrap each smokie in 1/3 slice of bacon (use low sodium bacon) and fix with a toothpick. Sprinkle with brown sugar until the smokies are just covered. Bake in a 350 oven till the bacon is brown and drain the grease. Place the cooked smokies in a crock pot at lowest setting to keep warm.

I usually make 2 packages of smokies and they are gone in a flash!! Kids can't seem to leave them alone and neither can the adults.
