Is this just different (cultural saying) in the part of the country you are from or
is there a real difference between the two?

Literally, they are not the same thing. However, people often do use the terms interchangeably. What is sold by Bruce's as yams is incredibly similar to what you can pick up in the produce department as sweet potatoes, if not the precise same thing. Something in the way they process it during canning, I cannot seem to duplicate--but I'm sure that they are the same in that particular case.

If you see yams or sweet pos advertised here in the USA, most likely they are from the same family. It's rare to find real yams here in the USA. Thanks Satx for the link

Jersey sweets are also hard to find in some areas of the U.S. They are lighter fleshed and sweet like chestnuts almost.

We have both in our store and the yams are a lighter color. Both are good.

I can't even find "sweet potatoes" around here, they're all yams. I haven't noticed a difference

I like Yams- Sweet Potatoes don't have that nice dark orange color that Yams have.
I think other people like Yams better to for that same reason.

I think that what we see most often in the stores in the US are sweet potatoes.

"Skin color comes in various shades of yellow-orange, tan, reddish-purple and red. Flesh colors come in shades of orange, yellow-orange, white, and even red."

Sweet Potato Varieties (http://www.all-about-sweet-potatoes.com/varieties.html - broken link)

I find this to be the case in my area-

"The softer, orange variety is commonly marketed as a yam in parts of North America, a practice intended to differentiate it from the firmer, white variety."

Sweet potato - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I always heard that it depended on what side of the Mason-Dixon line you were on...
