Yams can grow up to seven feet long. Not many stores would carry those. Yams prefer a more tropical climate with a longer growing season. Several links have been posted so I won't post mine. Just visualize a car taking home a seven foot yam tied to the roof going home from the market.

In a way... Yams are grown primarily in Africa, but also in South America and the Caribbean. So, the name yam came in through the door on the south side of the house.
