The groats are the "before" version of rolled oats. They are pinhead oats, which get rolled flat between metal rollers, and turned into rolled oats. When cooked, the texture is creamier, and the flavor is subtly different.
Thanks, for some reason I thought there was a difference between "rolled oats" and regular oatmeal.
Same here - sometimes a few walnut or pecan pieces go in the bottom of the bowl before the oatmeal gets poured in.
Have you ever eaten groats? It is pinhead oatmeal, the oatmeal before it gets flattened into what we know as "Quaker Oats". We cook it overnight in a small crockpot and it is wonderful. It's cheap bought in bulk and it only takes a little bit to make a lot!
Love steel cut oats, which are groats cut into two or three pieces.
The best way to eat them IMHO is plain. I cannot imagine ruining them with sugar or milk. Yeech
Rolled oats are too slimy for me. I am more of a texture person than a flavor person and I love a good old fashioned chew.
I don't care for warm sweet cereals, like rice, oatmeal or Cream of Wheat. I didn't learn to like rice until I met my husband, who grew up in rice country - Arkansas. I like them all with butter and salt. Same with grits.
As to the specific question - I put ham and mushrooms in my oatmeal. Strange, huh?
